Peter Webb, Legendary Maine Basketball Official, Dies at 88

A pioneer whose influence spanned decades of high school basketball

A Life Defined by the Rulebook

Peter Webb, a towering figure in Maine high school basketball, died at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped officiating standards across the sport.

For 27 years he served as the Maine Basketball Commissioner, a role in which he decided which officials earned the right to work the state’s championship tournaments, a responsibility he handled with meticulous fairness.

Beyond Maine, Webb was celebrated as a clinician who taught basketball officials worldwide, conducting clinics in more than 20 U.S. states and in Europe and Asia, where his deep knowledge of the rulebook was in constant demand.

He officiated over 2,000 basketball games and more than 1,000 baseball contests, a testament to his versatility and stamina, and he was known for applying every rule, even in blowout games, insisting that the integrity of every call mattered.

His dedication earned him induction into both the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, and he became the first of only two Maine representatives in the National High School Hall of Fame.

A Global Educator

Webb also held the position of worldwide president of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) during the 2001‑02 term, and he served as a non‑voting advisor on the National Federation of State High School Associations basketball rules committee for many years.

Colleagues and former students remember his humility and willingness to help, whether it was a small task at a nursing home where he interacted with staff and patients, or a complex rules question on the court.

Even as he approached the end of his life, Webb remained a stickler for applying all rules, all the time, a principle that continues to guide officials who learned from his example.

Webb’s impact on high school basketball will be felt for generations, a sentiment echoed by the many officials who credit his teachings with shaping their own careers.
