NASCAR reshapes 2026 Cup Series playoffs with single 10‑race postseason

New format replaces knockout Championship 4, adjusts race dates and returns Homestead‑Miami as championship venue

NASCAR has announced a sweeping revision to the 2026 Cup Series playoffs, replacing the knockout‑style Championship 4 with a single ten‑race postseason round that will be determined by regular‑season point standings.

Playoff format overhaul

Under the new system, the sixteen drivers who advance to the playoffs will be the top sixteen finishers in the twenty‑six‑race regular season, regardless of how many races they win, reviving the Chase‑style format that NASCAR used between 2004 and 2013.

The schedule reshuffle also brings notable changes to the race calendar. Homestead‑Miami Speedway, which spent the previous season outside the playoff picture, will re‑enter the postseason and will host the championship finale for the first time since 2019, taking the spot previously held by Phoenix Raceway.

Phoenix Raceway’s title‑decider race has been moved up by three weeks as part of a broader scheduling realignment, while Kansas Speedway’s playoff date was advanced a week to fill the vacancy left by New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s return to the regular season. Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s race was shifted forward two weeks to replace Kansas’s 2025 slot.

Additional adjustments include Charlotte Motor Speedway’s move from the Roval layout back to a traditional oval for the first time since 2017, and the first three playoff events will be staged at Darlington Raceway, World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway and Bristol Motor Speedway.

Later in the ten‑race stretch, Talladega Superspeedway will host the antepenultimate race and Martinsville Speedway the penultimate event, rounding out a diverse slate that blends superspeedways, short tracks and intermediate ovals.

Fans will get an early taste of the new format when the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington opens the playoffs on September 6, with live coverage on USA Network at 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
