In 2023, Jacob Tierney and Brendan Brady founded Accent Aigu Entertainment after completing the popular series *Letterkenny* and its spinoff *Shoresy*. The company’s name, drawn from Tierney’s Quebecois Francophone roots, was chosen in a casual setting and signaled a departure from traditional studio structures.
A Cost‑Conscious Production Philosophy
Accent Aigu built its workflow around indie‑film principles, emphasizing long, unbroken takes, tightly scheduled shoots, and a reliance on strong performances to reduce the need for multiple director blocks. By trimming unnecessary overhead and focusing resources on creative execution, the studio kept production costs low while preserving artistic integrity.
The flagship series *Heated Rivalry* emerged from this model. Adapted from Rachel Reid’s *Game Changers* novels, the show follows a queer hockey romance and was scripted by Jacob Tierney on speculation. Bell Media acquired the series despite its explicit content, and production took place in Ontario, where doubled soundstages enabled filming in locations such as Moscow and Las Vegas for a reported cost of roughly CA $3 million per episode.
The series quickly captured audience attention, with viewership climbing nearly 400 % in its opening week. This surge secured a second‑season renewal and attracted global distribution partners, most notably HBO, which acquired the rights for international rollout. By targeting passionate queer and female fans, the show illustrated how niche communities can drive mainstream success.
Accent Aigu’s approach has set a new benchmark for independent television production. Trusting creative vision over conventional budgets, the company’s lean yet ambitious framework demonstrates that cost‑effective storytelling can achieve widespread resonance, encouraging other unconventional projects to pursue similar pathways.
