The Florida State Seminoles and the SMU Mustangs are set to clash on Labor Day in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s season opener, a matchup that has been clouded by a wave of injuries affecting both squads.
Injury Concerns Shape ACC Opener
Florida State has announced that senior linebacker Blake Nichelson will miss the game entirely, while sophomore defensive lineman Darryll Desir has been lowered to doubtful status after being listed as questionable earlier in the week.
In addition, three more Seminoles—safety K.J. Kirkland, wide receiver Tae'Shaun Gelsey and tight end Gavin Markey—are also listed as doubtful, leaving the team thin at several key positions.
Despite the setbacks, Florida State will field players such as Chris Jones, Mikai Gbayor, Caleb LaVallee and Omar Graham Jr. to help fill the gaps left by the injured starters.
SMU, meanwhile, has seen at least nine players sidelined, including safety Ahmaad Moses, a pivotal tackler and interceptor, and backup cornerback Jaden Milliner-Jones, further straining a defensive backfield already dealing with depth issues.
The ACC requires teams to submit detailed injury updates up to 72 hours before kickoff, with a final report due just two hours prior to the game, underscoring the importance of the latest roster information.
For both programs, the injury adjustments force coaches to lean on less experienced contributors such as Chris Jones, Mikai Gbayor, Caleb LaVallee and Omar Graham Jr. for Florida State, while SMU will have to rely on younger talent to fill the void left by Moses and Milliner-Jones.
The opener carries extra significance as it marks the first ACC contest for both schools, with SMU having been idle since 2026, adding a layer of narrative to a game that could set the tone for the remainder of the season.
