The opening week of high school football across South Jersey has already produced a vivid early picture of the season, with the top 15 teams ranked based on performance, standout individual efforts, and emerging storylines that promise twists and turns throughout the schedule.
Record-Breaking Performances
Glassboro senior Xavier Sabb etched his name into the record books by breaking the all-time receiving yards mark with 2,600 yards, eclipsing Terrance Holmes' previous benchmark of 2,544. Meanwhile, St. Augustine sophomore quarterback Dylan Dellanoce has dazzled early, throwing for 358 yards, five touchdowns and not a single interception in his first two games. Rancocas Valley’s offense has been explosive, scoring 10 touchdowns and amassing 772 yards, with quarterback Zach Merhar responsible for seven of those scoring passes. Winslow Township sophomore Javon Thompson added six touchdowns as his team outscored opponents 93-6 in their opening pair of contests.
Defensive Highlights
Defensive prowess was on full display as Washington Township’s unit recorded seven takeaways — four interceptions and three fumble recoveries — mirroring the performance that helped them capture a state championship in 2019. Camden’s defense forced four interceptions after a slow start, while Ocean City’s unit has been flawless, allowing zero points and collecting eight sacks and five takeaways, with Jake Chapman leading the sack column at 3.5. Burlington Township’s defense transformed dramatically, shutting out their opponent after yielding 49 points in the opener, thanks in part to key interceptions by Gerald Sackie and Kyheem Freeman.
Milestones and Storylines
Coach Frank DeLano of Haddonfield reached his 190th career win, joining a select group of South Jersey coaches to achieve that milestone. Tim Gushue of Shawnee aims to climb into the 300-win club, which would make him the fourth coach in the region’s history to reach that landmark. West Deptford’s ground attack averaged over 10 yards per carry, driven by senior Zamir Davis’s 290 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Pennsauken’s offense contributed six touchdowns, highlighted by Daishaun Lassiter’s 226 yards on the ground, and looks forward to the return of speedster Zion Long, who should add depth and explosiveness. Northern Burlington recorded 12 offensive touchdowns, marking their first winning season since 2020, while Atlantic City struggled, surrendering 30 or more points in both games, with Don'taye Thompson posting a career-high 145 receiving yards. Millville managed only 230 total yards in a 39-20 loss, with Lee German contributing 101 yards after halftime, underscoring the challenges many programs face early in the season.
As the schedule unfolds, upcoming matchups will be crucial in shaping the rankings and determining which early leaders can maintain their momentum. The blend of record-breaking individual achievements, dominant team performances, and defensive breakthroughs suggests a season that will be defined by both offensive firepower and tactical discipline across South Jersey high school football.
