Former NHL defenseman Taylor Chorney joins Colorado Avalanche player development staff

Chorney, a 2005 draft pick and decade‑long NHL veteran, takes on a new role under Brian Willsie

The Colorado Avalanche announced the hiring of former defenseman Taylor Chorney to its player development staff, marking a return to the organization for a player who spent a decade in the NHL.

A decade in the NHL

Chorney, drafted 36th overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2005, logged 166 NHL games as a defenseman for five franchises, contributing four goals and 18 points during his ten‑year career that spanned 2008 to 2018.

After retiring in 2018, he played two seasons with HC Lugano in Switzerland and a further season with EC Salzburg in Austria, adding international experience to his résumé.

Leadership under Brian Willsie

He now joins a department led by Brian Willsie, the Avalanche’s longtime director of player development, who will oversee Chorney’s integration into the club’s developmental pathways.
