Mitchell Madden, the former head coach of the Knox Central Boys Basketball team, died this week after a prolonged battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by family members and local officials, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a coach who left a lasting impact on the program and the broader basketball community.
During his two seasons at Knox Central, Madden guided the squad to a 43‑18 record, capturing two appearances in the 13th Region tournament and securing the 51st District Championship in 2024, a triumph that capped a season many described as the program’s most successful in recent memory.
A Coaching Legacy
Before taking the helm at Knox Central, Madden served as head coach at Oneida Baptist Institute from 2022 to 2023, where he compiled an 11‑21 record, and earlier led the Jackson County Girls Basketball team during the 2010‑11 season to a 13‑17 finish, experiences that shaped his understanding of the game across different levels and communities.
After stepping down from his duties at Knox Central in early 2025, Madden devoted his remaining time to confronting the cancer that ultimately claimed his life, a fight he faced with the same determination he displayed on the sidelines.
Condolences poured in from neighboring programs, including the North Laurel Basketball family, South Laurel Boys Basketball, and Corbin Boys Basketball, as well as from schools and teams throughout the region, all of which acknowledged Madden’s contributions and extended prayers to his family and players.
Madden’s legacy endures in the records he set, the players he mentored, and the spirit of perseverance he embodied, qualities that continue to inspire coaches and athletes across Kentucky basketball.
