Community Roots
River Valley Forge, a new youth football and cheer organization based in the Alle‑Kiski Valley, has quickly become a hub for young athletes across the Allegheny Valley and Riverview school districts. The league was launched by Paul Perriello, his wife Chelsey Perriello, Rich Walsh and Molly Walsh, who combined their passion for sport with a vision of community building.
The program caters to a wide age range, offering flag football for kindergarteners and first‑graders, while tackle football teams are organized for 8‑U, 10‑U and 12‑U age groups, complemented by cheerleading squads for 6‑U, 8‑U, 10‑U and 12‑U. In total, 91 children are currently enrolled, representing a blend of talent from smaller districts that might otherwise lack structured sports opportunities.
Programs and Opportunities
Financial and material backing has been pivotal to the league’s early success. Springdale Energy contributed the largest seed donation, enabling the purchase of essential gear, while local coffee shop Bitty and Beau’s Coffee supplies free pizzas for team gatherings. Municipalities in the area contribute equipment and referee support, ensuring that coaches can focus on development rather than logistics.
Coaching philosophy centers on more than just athletic skill. Jimmy Braunlich, an assistant coach for the 10‑U team, stresses the teaching of football fundamentals, life lessons and the value of learning from failure. Rich Walsh, a co‑founder who leads the 12‑U squad, points to the broader community benefits, noting how youth sports foster personal growth and strengthen neighborhood ties. Chelsey Perriello adds that the backing of Springdale Councilmen Joe Kern and Dan Copeland — whose own daughters participate in the program — has been instrumental in securing resources and legitimacy.
For families, the league offers a rare chance for children from disparate districts to train together in a structured environment. Parent Nicole Didomenico praises the initiative for uniting youngsters and providing a safe, organized space. Registration remains open until Labor Day, and interested families can reach the organization at rvyfco@gmail.com.
