Shiel Wood, a mobile defensive coordinator who has worked at seven different college football programs since January 2018, recently signed a three-year contract with Texas Tech after being a finalist for the Broyles Award, marking his second time in nine years that he has not moved his family for a new job.
A Nomadic Journey
Wood’s career has taken him from Wofford College in South Carolina to the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, the United States Military Academy at West Point, Troy University, Tulane University and the University of Houston, a trajectory that includes a stint living in a pool house in Troy, Alabama, during the incomplete construction of his housing in early 2022.
After leaving the Army staff at West Point in mid‑January 2022, Wood stayed in that pool house until February, a period that raised concerns for his wife Bernadette, who managed school registrations and house moves amid the frequent relocations.
At Texas Tech, where the program posted a 12‑2 record last season, Wood received a 48 % salary increase and earned praise from head coach Joey McGuire, who highlighted his work ethic and cultural fit, noting the coach’s excitement about mentoring the recruits he helped bring in. Players such as Austin Romaine and A.J. Holmes credit Wood’s consistency for their own development.
Wood has expressed a desire to put down roots in Lubbock and avoid the coaching carousel that has defined much of his career, hoping his tenure at Texas Tech will provide the stability his family has long sought.
