Tennessee State University head coach Nolan Smith has named NBA veteran Robert Covington as the program’s new chief basketball officer, a decision that blends the university’s rich basketball heritage with the seasoned perspective of a professional player who has competed at the highest levels of the game.
A Hall of Famer’s New Chapter
Covington, a TSU Athletics Hall of Famer who starred from 2009 to 2013, leaves behind a distinguished NBA career that spanned six franchises and included 614 appearances. During his collegiate years he posted averages of 14.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, earned three All‑OVC selections, and was named first‑team All‑OVC in 2011‑12, as well as CollegeInsider.com OVC co‑MVP in 2012. His induction into the TSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024 capped a legacy that already resonated throughout the university community.
In his new role, Covington will oversee player relations, community engagement and strategic partnerships, serving as the primary liaison between TSU Athletics, the players and their families. He will work closely with external relations staff to forge collaborations that enhance both the competitive and personal development of the Tigers, while also expanding the program’s footprint beyond the court.
Speaking about his return, Covington expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to give back to the institution that helped shape his career. He emphasized a commitment to building a lasting legacy that extends beyond basketball, focusing on the holistic growth of student‑athletes and the strengthening of community ties throughout Nashville and beyond.
The appointment is expected to elevate TSU’s recruitment and development strategies, leveraging Covington’s NBA network and experience in player mentorship. By integrating his expertise in community outreach and partnership building, the program aims to provide its athletes with clearer pathways to professional opportunities while reinforcing the university’s mission of academic and personal excellence.
