Seattle Storm’s ‘Eye of the Storm’ Turns Neighborhood Courts into Community Hubs

Two new courts in Victory Heights and Benefit Playfield will serve as vibrant spaces for art, wellness and youth empowerment, with plans to expand across Seattle through 2030.

The Seattle Storm has launched the Eye of the Storm initiative, a bold effort to convert neighborhood basketball courts into thriving community hubs that combine creative expression, wellness programming and youth empowerment. Inspired by the WNBA’s broader campaign, the program aims to give Seattle residents a sense of belonging while providing spaces where young people can explore their identities and build confidence.

Community Hubs Take Shape Across Seattle

Community celebrations will mark the unveiling of two courts this month: Victory Heights in Northeast Seattle, where an artist activation will bring a fresh mural to life, and Benefit Playfield in Southeast Seattle, which will receive a Storm‑branded refresh that incorporates the official WNBA three‑point line. Both sites will host events organized by the Storm, turning the courts into gathering points for neighbors and local artists alike.

Sheridan Blanford, the Storm’s Chief Social Impact Officer, leads the effort, emphasizing that the initiative is about more than just basketball. “We want these courts to become places where community members feel connected, proud of their neighborhoods, and inspired to pursue their personal dreams,” Blanford said.

From 2024 through 2030, the Storm plans to transform two courts each year across the city, creating a network of community hubs that will reach neighborhoods throughout Seattle. The long‑term vision is to empower youth by offering consistent spaces for self‑discovery, confidence‑building and the realization of personal aspirations.

By weaving together art installations, wellness activities and the recognizable WNBA three‑point line, the Eye of the Storm program bridges sport with broader social impact, reinforcing the league’s commitment to community engagement while giving Seattle’s neighborhoods a fresh, inclusive gathering place.
