A Community in Mourning
Jordan Scott, a sophomore guard for the University of Evansville women’s basketball team, was killed early on September 6, 2024 after her vehicle struck a utility pole on State Road 62 just outside Evansville, Indiana.
The crash occurred at 12:42 a.m., and Scott was the sole occupant of the car; she was pronounced dead at the scene after the impact.
Scott had recently transferred from Wabash Valley College in Illinois and, as a freshman, posted an average of 12.5 points per game, quickly becoming a key contributor to the Purple Aces.
Beyond her on‑court performance, she was widely regarded as a unifying presence, praised by teammates, coaches and classmates for her positive influence and genuine kindness.
Her younger sister, Jayden Scott, a freshman on the same roster, posted a heartfelt message on social media reflecting on the close bond they shared and the pain of losing her sibling.
Head coach Ben Wierzba expressed deep sorrow, noting that Jordan’s leadership helped forge the team’s cohesion and that her loss is felt profoundly across the program.
In response to the tragedy, the University of Evansville opened counseling services for students and athletes, providing support resources to help the campus community cope with the sudden bereavement.
