Cade Tyson, the University of Minnesota’s leading scorer from the 2025-26 campaign, has rejoined the Gophers men’s basketball program ahead of the 2026-27 season, marking a remarkable comeback after a court‑ordered suspension that had rendered him ineligible.
A Legal Battle and a New Opportunity
The legal decision that barred Tyson from competition stemmed from a five‑for‑five ruling, but the former standout has been attending team drills since July, participating fully in practice sessions alongside current roster members as he awaits final eligibility confirmation.
During the previous season, Tyson averaged 19.6 points per game, topping the Gophers in scoring, free‑throw attempts and field goals, and his performance earned him All‑Big Ten honorable mention, NABC Second Team All‑District recognition and Academic All‑District honors.
A four‑year collegiate journey that began at Belmont and continued at North Carolina before culminating at Minnesota, Tyson amassed 1,621 career points and sank 213 three‑pointers, establishing himself as one of the program’s all‑time scoring threats.
Head coach Niko Medved expressed enthusiasm about the development, praising Tyson’s dedication to the eligibility process and highlighting the value of his experience as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
With alumni permitted limited practice sessions each year, Tyson’s involvement offers the Gophers a veteran presence and a proven scorer ready to contribute once his eligibility is officially confirmed.
