Chance Daniels, a standout football player at Sumrall High School, died early Saturday after a harrowing sequence that began with a gunshot near an ATV park and ended with a violent car crash on a Mississippi road as he was being rushed to the hospital.
A night of tragedy
The fatal incident unfolded just hours after Daniels took the field for the last time in a Friday night showdown between Sumrall High School and Jefferson Davis County High School, a game that had drawn a lively crowd to the stadium in Sumrall.
Witnesses reported that shots were fired in the vicinity of an ATV park along State Route 42, and Daniels was struck before he could reach his vehicle, where an unidentified female was waiting to drive him to medical care.
The ensuing crash occurred within the city limits of Prentiss, where the car veered off the road and collided with a guardrail, bringing the young athlete’s life to a sudden end.
Investigators from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation are now looking into the shooting, while Prentiss police continue to examine the circumstances of the crash; as of now, no arrests have been made and no suspects identified.
An autopsy is underway to determine whether Daniels’ death was caused by the gunshot wound, the impact of the crash, or a combination of both, with results expected in the coming days.
Sumrall High School issued a heartfelt statement honoring Daniels, describing him as a special young man who was deeply missed by his teammates, coaches, and the broader community.
In response to the loss, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to provide financial assistance to Daniels’ family during this painful time, reflecting the outpouring of support from neighbors and friends.
The tragedy has left the Sumrall community and the wider Mississippi high school football circuit in mourning, underscoring the fragile nature of life and the lasting impact of a promising young athlete’s untimely death.
