Arlington’s four high-school football programs have achieved a rare feat, winning their opening two games in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2014, a milestone that underscores a resurgence across the county’s programs.
Historic Start to the Season
Washington-Liberty High School edged McLean Highlanders 17-7, with running back Mikale Gray-Fenny and quarterback Tyler Flint-Steinig driving the offense, while Yorktown Patriots rolled past Ballou Knights 41-0, highlighted by Jamari Washington’s rushing touchdowns and Madalo Hall’s efficient passing. Meanwhile, Wakefield Warriors overcame a six-point deficit to defeat Rock Ridge Phoenix 21-14, as Judah Connor and Aman Azad found the end zone, and Bishop O’Connell Knights shut out St. John Paul the Great Wolves 41-0, amassing 342 total yards and scoring on both sides of the ball.
Defensively, the county’s teams were equally impressive; Washington-Liberty’s unit stifled McLean to just 114 total yards and held them to 114 rushing yards, Yorktown limited Ballou to 122 yards while gaining 336 of their own, and Bishop O’Connell’s defense forced four turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns, showcasing a relentless pursuit of possession.
The momentum now carries into non-district matchups scheduled for September 10, with Wakefield facing the Lewis Lancers, Washington-Liberty taking on the Edison Eagles, and Yorktown traveling to Centreville to meet the Wildcats, games that will further test the early-season vigor of these revived programs.
