A Duel That Echoed Across the Big West
Griffin Naess of Cal Poly and Steele Murdock of UC San Diego took the mound in a pitcher's duel that would decide the winner's bracket final of the 2026 Big West Championship. The stakes were high, the crowd expectant, and the two right-handers ready to etch their names into the tournament lore.
Naess turned in a masterful outing, limiting the Gauchos to just two hits while walking three batters over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out 11 opponents, a performance that underscored his reputation as a workhorse; the victory added to his tally of seven wins in each of his three seasons at Cal Poly, bringing his career total to 21.
Across the rubber, Murdock answered with eight frames of his own, surrendering the lone run on a nubber single and yielding three hits and four walks. Yet he also fanned 11 batters, matching Naess's strikeout total and keeping the game within reach.
The decisive run arrived in the second inning when Nate Castellon delivered a nubber hit that slipped through the infield, driving in the only point of the contest. The play highlighted the thin margin that defined the entire game.
Cal Poly managed just two additional singles, from Dylan Kordic and Ryan Tayman, while the Gauchos left nine runners stranded on base. The Cal Poly squad also included Eric Newman, Larry Lee, Jake Downing, Gavin Spiridonoff, Cam Hoiland, Anthony Potestio, J.C. Allen, Trevian Martinez, Jackson Flora, and Nate Vargas, each contributing to the team's effort despite the quiet bats.
Looking ahead, Cal Poly will meet UC Santa Barbara in the winner's bracket final, with Carson Turnquist slated to oppose Calvin Proskey on the mound. The upcoming clash promises another chapter in the rivalry, as both programs seek to advance toward the championship series.
UC San Diego's roster, which included Steele Murdock and the supporting cast of teammates, will look to regroup as they await their next assignment.
