A Rare Feat in American Racing
Katherine Legge, a 45-year-old veteran of international motorsport, is set to undertake one of the most demanding feats in American racing: competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.
The British driver, who grew up in Surrey, England, will step into a Chevrolet-powered entry for the 500-mile spectacle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina for the 600-mile NASCAR stock-car marathon later that evening.
Legge’s program is anchored by a partnership with HMD Racing, A.J. Foyt Racing, Live Fast Motorsports and Michael Shank Racing, all of which will field her in the No 11 Chevrolet for Indianapolis and the No 78 Chevrolet for the Charlotte night race.
Her odds reflect the longshot nature of the undertaking, with betting lines of +25000 at Indianapolis and +250000 at Charlotte, yet the driver’s résumé includes a string of victories in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 2005 Atlantic Championship.
Legge brings more than two decades of experience across open-wheel, sports-car and stock-car disciplines, having made 47 Indy-style starts, including four appearances at the Brickyard, and 101 sports-car races, among them twelve Rolex 24-hour contests.
Her most recent foray into the NASCAR Cup Series yielded a 17th-place finish in last year’s Brickyard 400, a result that underscores her adaptability despite limited prior exposure to the American stock-car format.
The double-duty attempt places her among an exclusive club that includes Tony Stewart, John Andretti, Robby Gordon, Kurt Busch and Kyle Larson, each of whom has previously completed the demanding schedule, with Stewart achieving top-10 finishes in all four of his attempts.
While rain delayed Larson’s 2024 bid, the precedent shows that the challenge, though daunting, is not insurmountable, and Legge’s proven track record in diverse series fuels optimism among her teams.
The upcoming races will be staged against the backdrop of iconic venues: the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana, the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, and the coastal town of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, where Legge’s preparation has included testing sessions.
