Students Experience Negro Leagues Legacy Through Traveling Exhibit in Marion

Hands‑on program blends baseball history, culture and teamwork for junior‑high learners

A Day of History and Baseball

Nearly two hundred junior‑high students from southern Illinois gathered at The Oasis in Marion for a traveling exhibit that brings the story of Negro Leagues legend Buck O’Neil to life.

The program, titled “Lessons from the Field,” was organized by Illinois Humanities in partnership with Legacy Training Inc., the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and local educators, offering a blend of classroom learning and on‑field action.

Buck O’Neil, who spent decades as a player, manager and ambassador for the Negro Leagues, is remembered not only for his on‑diamond achievements but also for his relentless advocacy for recognition and respect. In 2006 he fell just one vote short of induction into the Hall of Fame, a setback that underscored his perseverance.

Students participated in hands‑on activities at Thrillville, watched the Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Championship, and took part in live college games, turning history into a tangible experience.

Voices from the Community

Tyler Dixon highlighted O’Neil’s resilience, noting that his determination offers a powerful lesson for young people facing their own challenges.

Herbie Voss described the event as a memorable field trip that merges education with recreation, giving students a deeper appreciation for the culture that shaped America’s pastime.

Lynne Chambers said the program connects history, culture and teamwork through baseball, hoping participants leave with a richer understanding of both the Negro Baseball League and broader American history.

Ralph Santana emphasized the importance of understanding the game’s heritage, pointing out that the chance to see top talent compete in the Ohio Valley Conference added excitement and context to the lesson.

The exhibit will remain open to the public at The Oasis through June 30, inviting the wider community to explore this vital chapter of sports history.
