A New Look for a Key Forward
Zymicah Wilkins arrived at North Carolina State as a highly touted recruit, ranked third in the state and 78th nationally, but the redshirt freshman forward has since redirected his focus toward a different style of play.
After a deliberate effort to reshape his body, Wilkins has dropped roughly 25 pounds, trading bulk for speed and shooting range. The coaching staff now envisions him as a perimeter threat rather than a traditional post player.
His skill set now aligns with the Wolfpack’s need for spacing and versatility, allowing him to operate both on the wing and at the top of the key. The move comes as the team navigates the loss of former top recruit Cole Cloer, who entered the transfer portal last year.
Wilkins’ recruitment story includes offers from Michigan, Clemson, Illinois and Georgia, underscoring the national interest in his abilities. He ultimately committed to NC State, where he will share the floor with fellow big men Eemeli Yalaho and the newly arrived Kingston Whitty.
Coach Will Wade, who previously tried to retain Wilkins, sees the forward as a potential rotation piece behind Yalaho, noting that both players stand around 6‑8 to 6‑9 and bring complementary skill sets without relying on rim protection.
With the upcoming season on the horizon, Wilkins is expected to contribute in multiple ways, from perimeter shooting to defensive versatility, as the Wolfpack looks to rebuild around a refreshed roster.
