The Mexican Baseball League (LMB) is set to rewrite the way its games are officiated, announcing that fully automated ball‑and‑strike calls will be used in regular‑season contests beginning May 22, 2026.
Automated Strike Zones Make Their Debut
The league will deploy a Trackman‑driven system that captures every pitch and instantly determines whether the ball crosses the plate within the designated strike zone. During the initial rollout, a human umpire stationed in the operations booth will receive the system’s data and transmit the call to the field.
The first deployment will take place during a road series involving the Tecolotes Dos Laredos, who will face the Charros de Jalisco from May 22 through May 24. The same technology will later be showcased at home when the Dos Laredos host the Algodoneros de Union Laguna from June 23 to June 25.
Crew Adjustments and Challenge Rules
In matches that run under the automated system, the traditional four‑umpire crew will be trimmed to three on the diamond, with the fourth official monitoring the Trackman feed from the stadium’s operations center.
Players will forfeit the ability to challenge ball‑and‑strike rulings in games governed by the robot umpires, although replay reviews for all other types of plays will remain available, preserving a measure of on‑field dispute resolution.
A Push for Competitive Equity
League officials say the technology is intended to curb the variability introduced by human error, thereby creating a more level playing field where outcomes hinge more on strategy and execution than on the subjective interpretation of strike zones.
Rollout Schedule
All twenty franchises are slated to complete their allotted two automated‑umpire series by July 2, 2026, after which the league has indicated that the next phase of the system’s expansion has not yet been disclosed.
