Lehigh University has named Corey Mayer as the new head coach of its women's field hockey program, tapping a coach whose career blends high‑level playing experience with a proven track record as an assistant at Villanova University.
During five seasons as an assistant at Villanova, Mayer helped the Wildcats capture 41 victories, reach the Big East Tournament in 2023 and 2025, and develop a recruiting pipeline that elevated the program's national profile.
A Culture of Championship Aspirations
In her introductory remarks, Mayer said she wants to instill a passionate team culture at Lehigh while preserving the university's scholar‑athlete ethos. She emphasized that success will be measured not only in wins but in the development of student‑athletes who excel academically and competitively.
Athletic Director Jeremy Gibson praised Mayer's leadership, noting her deep understanding of the sport and her ability to recruit talent that aligns with Lehigh's academic standards.
Mayer expressed gratitude to her mentors, including Christy Morgan and Joanie Milhous, whose guidance shaped her coaching philosophy. She also thanked the broader Lehigh community for the opportunity to lead the program.
Before entering coaching, Mayer played at James Madison University and later professionally for the USA Women's National Development Team and the Holcombe Hockey Club in England's Premier League, experiences she says inform her tactical approach.
A graduate of James Madison with a master's in special education, Mayer brings both analytical rigor and a commitment to inclusive development. She aims to position Lehigh as a top contender in the Patriot League and to build a sustainable winning tradition.
