A Homecoming with Vision
Tim Bezbatchenko has returned to Ohio, taking on the role of president of global soccer for Haslam Sports Group (HSG). In this capacity he will supervise the Columbus Crew, the club’s upcoming NWSL entry slated for 2028, and a slate of future soccer investments the group plans to pursue.
The move marks a full‑circle moment for Bezbatchenko, who first joined HSG in 2019 when the group acquired the operating rights to the Crew. Over his career he has amassed more than 17 years of experience in top‑level soccer management, helping to construct squads that captured three MLS Cups, one Supporters’ Shield and three Canadian Championships.
During his initial stint with Columbus he worked closely with general manager Issa Tall, a partnership that resulted in the 2022 acquisition of forward Cucho Hernández and the hiring of former head coach Wilfried Nancy. Those achievements laid a foundation that the new role seeks to build upon.
Bezbatchenko’s recent two‑year tenure with Black Knight Football Club broadened his perspective, as he oversaw European properties including AFC Bournemouth, FC Lorient, Moreirense FC and Hibernian FC. He has spoken of the value of that experience as he looks to translate European insights into success in both the NWSL and MLS.
In public remarks, Bezbatchenko expressed honor at the opportunity to launch an NWSL franchise while supporting the Crew’s ambitions. He also took the chance to thank Bill Foley, Ryan Caswell and the entire Black Knight team for the chance to work across multiple continents.
Dee and Jimmy Haslam praised the executive’s leadership, emphasizing his dedication to building a championship‑ready environment. Their endorsement underscores the strategic importance of Bezbatchenko’s return to Ohio.
