Greg Powers Adds Jimmy Mullin to Sun Devil Hockey Coaching Staff

Former U.S. Development Team Assistant Brings Elite Track Record to Arizona State

A New Chapter for Sun Devil Hockey

Arizona State University’s men’s hockey program announced a significant addition to its coaching staff this week, as head coach Greg Powers confirmed the hiring of Jimmy Mullin to lead the team’s development efforts for the 2026‑27 season.

Mullin arrives after a distinguished tenure with the U.S. National Development Team, where he helped guide a roster that captured a silver medal at the 2022 Under‑18 World Championships and contributed to the 2022 Under‑17 NTDP’s gold at the World U17 Challenge.

Mullin’s Development Legacy

During his time with the USNDTP, Mullin coached Arizona State alumnus Cruz Lucius and mentored a pipeline of talent that includes Logan Cooley, Cutter Gauthier, Lane Hutson, Ryan Leonard, Frank Nazar, Will Smith, Jimmy Snuggerud, James Hagens, Cole Eiserman, Teddy Stiga, EJ Emery and Max Plante, all of whom have progressed to professional or elite amateur ranks.

Mullin’s playing pedigree also adds depth to his coaching profile; the former fourth‑round NHL draft pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning spent five collegiate seasons at Miami University, where he helped secure a CCHA regular‑season championship in 2013 and a historic NCHC tournament title in 2015, before concluding his college career at Minnesota State University Mankato, which captured a WCHA championship in 2016.

His professional journey continued in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings, where he honed his skills over three seasons before transitioning to coaching roles that have included stints as director of player development for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets and director of scouting for the NAHL’s Chippewa Steel.

Recent Coaching Experience

Most recently, Mullin served as associate head coach for the USHL’s Fargo Force during the 2025‑26 season, a role that underscored his ability to blend strategic insight with player growth.

Beyond the rink, Mullin and his wife Kenzie Mullin are proud parents to daughter Eloise Mullin and son James Mullin, who provide daily inspiration as he embraces his new role within the Sun Devil community.

Expressing enthusiasm, Mullin said he is eager to contribute to Arizona State’s tradition of excellence and to help shape the next generation of Sun Devil hockey talent.
