North Carolina State University revealed this week that Ognjen Vasiljevic will serve as an assistant coach on the men’s basketball staff, marking the first major addition to head coach Justin Gainey’s inaugural roster.
A Global Lens for the Wolfpack
Born in Loznica, Serbia, Vasiljevic arrived in the United States after a distinguished playing career that included MVP honors at the U16 European Championships and a stint at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, where he helped the team capture two Heartland Conference titles.
His coaching journey began at Ohio Valley University, progressed to a full‑time role at Life University, and most recently saw him lead the South Alabama Jaguars as an assistant and director of basketball operations in the Sun Belt Conference.
During his tenure at Life University the Running Eagles posted multiple 20‑win seasons and captured a conference championship, a period highlighted by the development of All‑American guard Chaze Harris.
Strategic Impact on Raleigh
Vasiljevic’s fluency in Serbian and deep connections to European youth national teams are expected to bolster NC State’s overseas recruiting pipeline, offering prospects a clear pathway from European development models to the ACC.
Beyond recruitment, his emphasis on skill work and long‑term player growth aligns with Gainey’s vision of building a competitive, culturally rich program that can contend for championships in the near future.
