A Comeback Story
Rachel Llanes, a seasoned forward who has logged extensive minutes in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League and the National Women’s Hockey League, brings a wealth of experience to the professional ranks. Her journey includes stints with the Boston Blades and Boston Pride, as well as representing Team China at the 2022 Olympic Games and World Championships, moments she describes as once‑only dreams for many women in the sport.
After stepping away from competition to prioritize her mental well‑being, Llanes transitioned to coaching the San Jose Barracudas, where she honed her leadership skills off the ice. The hiatus gave her space to reflect, and she emerged with a renewed focus on returning to the game on her own terms.
The Road Ahead
Now a free agent, Llanes is training intensively, eyeing a spot in the newly formed Professional Women’s Hockey League. The prospect of joining the league’s upcoming expansion franchise in her hometown of San Jose adds a personal stake to her ambition, turning the pursuit of a roster place into a broader mission to showcase that dedication can overcome any obstacle.
Beyond her own playing goals, Llanes hopes to serve as a beacon for young athletes from communities where hockey is still a niche sport. By sharing her story of perseverance, she aims to prove that talent can flourish anywhere, provided there is the will to chase the dream.
