A New Chapter for Las Cruces Baseball
The past few weeks have seen the retirement of three of the most recognizable high school baseball coaches in Las Cruces, New Mexico, each ending a multi‑year run that helped define the local sports landscape.
Rusty Evans, who spent more than a decade at Centennial High School, was the only coach the Hawks have ever known, guiding the program from its inception and capturing a state title in 2016 while also securing six district championships.
Gil Padilla, longtime leader of Las Cruces High, departs with a career tally of 426 victories, a record that places him fifth among all New Mexico high school coaches, and a 2003 state runner‑up finish that remains a benchmark for the program.
Carlos Lara, who steered Organ Mountain to a district championship in 2024, finishes his tenure with a 56‑29‑1 record, underscoring a rapid rise that culminated in the school’s first district crown in recent memory.
Their departures prompt reflections on the role of coaching continuity in building program culture, and they also open the door for fresh leadership to shape the next generation of student‑athletes across the district.
Community members, alumni and fellow coaches have expressed gratitude for the mentors’ contributions, noting that the values instilled on the diamond will echo through future seasons.
As the schools begin the search for successors, the focus remains on preserving the competitive spirit and community ties that these veterans cultivated over their careers.
