SIUE Baseball Falls in OVC Semifinal After Extra-Inning Thriller

Cougars stranded with 11 runners on base as Eastern Illinois advances to championship

The top-seeded SIUE Cougars baseball team saw their OVC Championship run halted on Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision in ten innings to second-seeded Eastern Illinois. The loss left the Cougars with a 33-23 record and forced them into an elimination showdown later that evening against either Little Rock or Southern Indiana.

Extra-Inning Drama at the OVC Tournament

Eastern Illinois broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the tenth, capitalizing on a double by Brett Stanley that scored Quad Peters with the game-winning run. SIUE’s closer Easton Harris surrendered the decisive hit, and the Panthers subsequently stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to seal the victory.

The Cougars had ample opportunities earlier, loading the bases in the sixth and seventh innings but failing to convert. Ryan Niedzwiedz opened the scoring with a first-inning RBI single, and a sixth-inning rally saw Bloomer and Niedzwiedz reach base before Ethan Willoughby’s sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position, only to be halted by EIU reliever James Geshel.

Pitching highlights included starter Tim Teixeira working seven innings and allowing just two runs, while Joseph Martin escaped a one-out double by Brett Stanley in the eighth. Despite outhitting Eastern Illinois 8-6, SIUE left eleven runners on base throughout the contest.

Individual performances featured Daniel Gierer leading the Cougars with two hits, and the team’s offense was bolstered by contributions from Terrick Thompson-Allen, Isaiah Kettler, and Mack Mitchell. The defeat sets up a must-win game for SIUE later Friday, where a win would keep their hopes alive for a championship berth.
