Patriots Power Past Richmond
The No. 4 George Mason baseball team delivered a commanding 11-6 victory over No. 2 Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament, securing a spot in the next round and setting up a showdown with top-seeded Saint Joseph's.
From the outset the Patriots imposed their will, scoring in each of the first five innings while Richmond committed an error in every early frame, a mistake that proved costly.
Diego Cardenas anchored the pitching staff, tossing 6.1 innings and striking out a season-high six batters, while Owen Clyne went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Jake Butler contributed a 3-for-4 performance, delivering three consecutive singles, two RBI and two runs, and Logan Vaughan added two RBI despite being held hitless at the plate.
RJ Johnson Jr. sparked the offense with a two-run home run to center in the top of the fourth, and the Patriots continued to build momentum as Richmond rallied with four runs in the seventh but could not close the gap.
The win underscores George Mason's depth; the roster also includes Lucas Alberti, Julius Bagnerise, Evan Blanchard, Matthew Westley, Jackson Morse, Jackson Hinchcliffe, Luciano Terilli, Michael Elko, Dylan Winebrenner, Evan Wilson, Ryan Recio, Reid Downs, Aidan Okeefe, Chris Schaller, Noah Haught, Owen Stewart, Shawn Camp, Thomas Parker and Brandon Hsu.
Next up, the Patriots will meet Saint Joseph's in a highly anticipated matchup, looking to carry the momentum forward in the tournament.
