The Destin High School Sharks flag football team saw their inaugural playoff run come to a close on May 7, when they were edged 40‑13 by the Bolles Bulldogs in the Class 1A regional finals held in Jacksonville, Florida.
The Regional Final Showdown
Despite finishing the season with a 12‑6 record and securing a spot in the Elite Eight, the Sharks entered the match as underdogs against a Bulldogs squad that leveraged a series of spectacular catches to pull away.
Coach Kyle Bryant later reflected that the game felt like the ball simply didn’t bounce their way, citing a handful of freak accidents that swung momentum.
Resilience Amid Adversity
Injuries and departures peppered the schedule, yet the team rallied around a culture of unity, with Bryant noting that every player, even those absent from the stat sheet, contributed to the effort.
Senior standouts Evie Gherdovich, Mia Castaneda, Elena Martin and game‑ending scorer Bailey Gaffney gave the Sharks a glimpse of future promise, even as they celebrated their first‑year milestone.
Looking Ahead
With returning standouts such as Neilya Stewart, Kaylee Kaiser, Lilly McClen and Lindi Mansfield, plus a handful of freshmen elevated to larger roles, Bryant says preparation for next year begins now.
The early exit adds pressure, but the coach remains optimistic that the experience will fuel growth over the summer.
