The University of Richmond baseball team saw its 2026 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship come to an abrupt close on May 22, after dropping two consecutive games in the consolation bracket. The Spiders finished the season with a 33‑24 overall record, a 20‑10 mark within the league, and a second straight 30‑plus win campaign guided by head coach Mik Aoki.
A weather‑delayed opening loss
Play against three‑seed VCU was halted by rain after the Spiders had taken an early lead. Michael Elko’s single off a wild pitch plated the first run, but VCU answered with four straight scores before the game was suspended. Starter Joey Giordano had surrendered three runs on one hit and four walks in two‑thirds of an inning, while Chayse Gruber later threw four and two‑thirds innings of one‑run ball with a strikeout.
Second defeat to George Mason
Two days later Richmond faced six‑seed George Mason in the consolation bracket. Starter Jackson Hinchliffe gave up five runs on five hits in three innings, and RJ Johnson Jr.’s two‑run homer trimmed the deficit. The Patriots erupted for five runs in the fourth, extending the lead to 11‑2. Relief efforts from Chase Topolski and Dominic Ruggiero struggled, but Bijan Anvar’s three scoreless frames kept the Spiders within striking distance. A flurry of hits in the seventh and ninth innings produced four more runs, but the rally fell short, ending the season at 33‑24.
Despite the double loss, the campaign was marked by resilience and depth, with contributions from a roster that included Noah Haught, Evan Wilson, Dylan Winebrenner, Justin Gay, RJ Johnson Jr., Chase Topolski, Dominic Ruggiero, Bijan Anvar, Chris Schaller, Ryan Recio, Reid Downs and Aidan O'Keefe. The team’s performance underscored a rebuilding year that followed a postseason absence the previous season.
