A Tribute on the Track
When the green flag drops for the Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the roar of engines will be accompanied by a solemn reminder of sacrifice. NASCAR driver Chris Buescher will wear the name of Army Sgt. Bobby Frank Limerick on his windshield header as part of the 600 Miles of Remembrance program.
Limerick, a 20‑year‑old who fell in a firefight in Quang Ngai Province on August 25, 1971, served with the 11th Light Infantry Brigade, 3rd Battalion, 1st Infantry, Company A. His story will be highlighted during a moment of silence scheduled for the race’s midpoint, a pause that will unite fans, drivers and viewers in collective reflection.
The connection between Limerick’s family and the racing community was forged by Fastenal, a longtime sponsor of RFK Racing. Ryan Upshaw, a Fastenal employee and Limerick’s nephew, supplied the details that made the tribute possible, and he will be among the family members attending the race and the fan‑day festivities in Charlotte.
Every car entered in the Coca‑Cola 600 will bear the name of a fallen service member on its windshield header, turning the field into a moving memorial. The initiative, championed by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, underscores the sport’s commitment to honoring those who gave their lives.
The broadcast will air on Amazon Prime at 5 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, giving millions the chance to witness both the high‑octane competition and the poignant ceremony that precedes it.
