Rutgers athletics is embarking on a sweeping renovation of Jersey Mike’s Arena, aiming to bring the facility up to modern Big Ten standards and position it as a premier venue for Rutgers basketball and other events.
A Multi‑Year, Multi‑Million Dollar Project
The overhaul, projected to cost between $155 million and $225 million, will upgrade the lobby, concourse, restrooms, concessions, premium seating, technology infrastructure and athlete spaces. Officials say the investment is intended to enhance fan experience, attract higher‑profile events and generate new revenue streams.
Funding is expected to come from a mix of naming‑rights agreements, donor contributions, state bonds and premium revenue from upgraded seating and corporate partnerships. The renovation is projected to produce about $16.2 million in annual gross revenue, though operating costs are estimated at roughly $7 million per year.
Construction will be phased to limit disruption, with work scheduled during off‑season windows. Initial phases will address the lobby and exterior for eight to twelve months, followed by concourse, restroom and concession upgrades for twelve to eighteen months, then premium seating and club areas for eight to twelve months, and finally technology and athlete‑area improvements for six to ten months.
Off‑Season Execution to Preserve Operations
By concentrating major construction activities when the arena is not hosting games, Rutgers hopes to keep the venue functional for practices and limited events while the upgrades are underway. The phased approach is designed to minimize impact on the schedule of the university’s athletic programs.
