Auburndale High School's football squad posted a decisive 22-0 win over Fort Meade in a spring practice game that underscored the team's offensive versatility and defensive discipline.
Evaluating Talent in a Condensed Format
Coach Antonio Thomas of Auburndale admitted that the brevity of the spring schedule makes it difficult to assess players fully, noting that the limited game reps force coaches to rely heavily on practice observations and statistical flashes.
Quarterback Teo Edwards, a sophomore, threw for 117 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 rushing yards in both contests, giving the team a dual-threat presence. Senior running back Pat Weir Jr. found the end zone, and junior wide receiver Major McBath secured a touchdown reception. Freshman defensive back Rakeem River intercepted a pass and returned it for a pick-six, while linebackers Malachi Moore and Charles Calhoun anchored the defense with solid tackling.
Fort Meade's Perspective
Fort Meade coach Maurice Russell acknowledged that his squad needs work on catching accuracy and physicality, especially as the program prepares for a new classification in 2026. The team enters the season after capturing the FHSAA Rural Florida Invitational title in 2024 and finishing the previous year with a 7-4 record.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming realignment, driven by the suspension of the rural division, is expected to place Fort Meade in Class 1A competition next year. Meanwhile, Auburndale's early-season performance offers a glimpse of how young players can step into prominent roles when given limited but high-impact opportunities.
Spring football remains a vital testing ground for programs across Florida, providing a unique blend of development and competition that shapes rosters before the traditional fall season begins.
