The Holy Trinity girls' flag football team entered the Section 2 Class C championship as the reigning champions, boasting a flawless 13‑0 record. Their opponent, Catskill, waited at Christian Brothers Academy in Colonie, New York, ready to test the unbeaten streak.
From the opening quarter, Catskill seized momentum, opening the scoring with a 6‑0 lead. By halftime the Catskill offense had extended its advantage to 13‑0, highlighted by Zwange Edwards’ 50‑yard punt return for a touchdown.
Sanchez’s Defensive Mastery
Naichaliz Sanchez emerged as the game’s pivotal figure, intercepting three passes and converting two of those turnovers into touchdowns. Her play shifted the balance and kept Catskill ahead.
Quarterback Ella DiBacco, who had guided Holy Trinity through the season, threw three interceptions, two of them caught by Sanchez, underscoring the defensive pressure Catskill applied.
A late rally brought Holy Trinity within striking distance, trimming the score to 20‑13 with just over four minutes remaining, but the comeback fell short as Catskill held firm.
Coach EJ Hakala reflected on the season after the final whistle, praising his squad’s dedication while acknowledging the sting of defeat.
