A championship pedigree arrives in Oshkosh
Steve Schweer was announced this week as the 16th head coach of the University of Wisconsin‑Oshkosh men’s basketball team, slated to begin his duties on June 1. He replaces Matt Lewis, who steered the program for eight seasons.
Schweer’s coaching résumé includes a decade of progressive responsibility, most recently as associate director of athletics and head coach at Illinois College, where he captured two Midwest Conference regular‑season crowns and guided the team to NCAA Division III championships in 2023 and 2024.
During his tenure at Illinois College he also instituted the Student‑Athlete Justice, Equity and Inclusion Team, oversaw the program’s record‑setting win streak, and earned recognition for academic and community initiatives.
His coaching path began at Lakeland College in 2008, continued with assistant roles at North Central College — where he helped secure the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament title in 2017 — and five years at Monmouth College, before a stint as head assistant at North Central College in 2017‑18.
A standout player at Illinois Wesleyan University from 2003 to 2006, Schweer earned four letters, was twice named defensive player of the year, and contributed to Sweet Sixteen runs in 2003 and 2004.
UW‑Oshkosh’s basketball program boasts a storied history, with 15 WIAC regular‑season titles, five WIAC tournament championships and 12 postseason appearances, including the 2019 national championship. Schweer’s arrival is expected to build on that tradition as the Titans look to extend their recent success.
