At the ACC Spring Meetings on Amelia Island, Florida, Florida State University Athletics Director Michael Alford outlined the expectations for the 2026 football season, emphasizing the program’s renewed focus on championship contention.
Alford highlighted a series of facility upgrades, increased financial investments, and recent coaching staff enhancements that he says are designed to close the gaps exposed in previous seasons.
He specifically praised John Garrett for instituting new processes and procedures that are intended to rebuild the program to its historic standard.
A Roster Rebuilt for Competition
The director noted successful recruitment in key areas, including the running back room, the offensive line, and the defensive backs, with particular attention to safety positions that have been a weakness in recent years.
Alford reminded readers that the Seminoles finished the prior season with just five wins, and head coach Mike Norvell has managed only seven victories over the past two campaigns, placing him under significant scrutiny heading into the upcoming year.
Despite the pressure, Alford stressed that the university maintains a policy of continuous communication and annual performance evaluations with Norvell, using them to set and reassess clear expectations.
The Athletics Director reaffirmed that Florida State’s standard is to compete for national championships, not merely to secure bowl eligibility, and that the recent resource allocations are aimed at restoring the program to its historically dominant level.
