Marian High School Appoints Alum Matthew Sobieralski as New Boys Basketball Coach

After Robb Berger’s departure, longtime assistant and English teacher returns to lead the Knights

Marian High School announced this week that Matthew Sobieralski, a 2006 alumnus and former assistant coach, will take over as the head coach of the boys basketball team.

Sobieralski, who has spent the last eight years teaching English at the school while serving as an assistant coach for 16 years, including the past three as assistant head coach, expressed excitement about returning to the place that shaped his own athletic and academic journey.

A Return to Alma Mater

"The school shaped who I am today and I am eager to give back to our student‑athletes," Sobieralski said in a statement released by the administration.

Athletic Director Steve Ravotto praised the selection, noting that Sobieralski stood out during an extensive search conducted by a committee of stakeholders.

Ravotto highlighted the coach’s professional dedication, his unique perspective as a former student‑athlete, and his commitment to building on the program’s past successes while guiding the next generation of Marian Knights.

The appointment follows the dismissal of former head coach Robb Berger in March, which came after a one‑game suspension stemming from a repeated IHSAA violation.

Ravotto emphasized that the decision was part of a broader effort to refocus the program and restore confidence among players, parents and the wider community.

With Sobieralski at the helm, the Knights look to leverage his deep familiarity with the school’s culture and his proven ability to develop talent as they prepare for the upcoming season.
