Groundbreaking Ceremony Launches New Basketball Courts at Fairfield Hills

Community leaders celebrate donation‑funded project set to open in mid‑June

A bright spring morning saw a modest crowd assembled on the east lawn of Fairfield Hills as Newtown Community Center Director Matt Ariniello presided over the groundbreaking of two brand‑new outdoor basketball courts. The event brought together local officials, community volunteers and a handful of residents eager to see the latest addition to the area’s recreational landscape.

A community‑driven investment in recreation

The courts are being built adjacent to the existing playground and will feature a fenced‑in asphalt surface, two benches inside the playing area and a design that blends with the surrounding green space. Construction is expected to take six to eight weeks, with a projected opening in mid‑June, just as the summer season begins.

The entire project is financed by a generous donation from Lindell Hertberg, whose contribution was approved by the Community Center Commission, the Board of Selectmen, the Board of Finance and the Legislative Council earlier this year. The Planning and Zoning Commission and the Fairfield Hills Authority also gave their endorsement, paving the way for the development.

While the courts will primarily serve the center’s childcare and youth programming, they will remain accessible to the public during off‑hours. Operating hours will be limited to daylight, closing at dusk, and no additional lighting or parking expansions are planned, as recent parking improvements already meet the site’s needs.

Ariniello highlighted the significance of the new facilities, noting that they represent another exciting step forward for Fairfield Hills as a destination for recreation, wellness and community connection. The courts join a growing list of amenities that already include walking trails, a playscape, gathering spaces, the Community Center itself and a recently approved splash pad project funded by the State of Connecticut and the Community Center Special Revenue Fund.
