San Diego State’s athletic programs enjoyed a vibrant stretch this week, with the baseball squad delivering a commanding performance, the golf teams adding another layer of distinction to their season, and the basketball side confronting a significant setback that could shape the roster for the coming year.
In the Mountain West Conference Tournament, the Aztecs downed the New Mexico Lobos 11-6. Adam Magpoc and Max Farrell each went 3-for-5, each smashing a home run, while Isaac Araiza earned the win after a solid inning and Aidan Russell sealed the game with a save in the final four frames.
Golf Excellence
The men’s golf team wrapped up its season tied for 13th at the NCAA regionals in Arizona, with sophomore Harry Takis finishing 13th individually and posting a 69.23 scoring average. On the women’s side, Ema Narita earned All-Mountain West First Team honors after averaging 72.79 strokes, and the program celebrated its seventh league championship, a streak that includes four consecutive titles from 2022 through 2025.
The setback came in basketball when transfer Nick Anderson, who averaged 15.5 points for Rice last season while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc, suffered a torn ACL and meniscus during a workout in Houston. Coach Brian Dutcher said the university will support Anderson through his rehabilitation and is filing an appeal to seek an additional year of eligibility.
Beyond the scores and statistics, the week underscored the Aztecs’ deep connections to their locales, from the sunny fields of San Diego to the competitive arenas in Texas and Arizona. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, the programs are poised to translate recent triumphs into sustained excellence across the board.
