The University of Houston men’s basketball program announced this week that it will compete in the 2026 Players Era 8 Championship, a marquee event that forms part of a 37‑game tournament broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.
The Cougars open the competition on November 17, 2026 against Rutgers, a matchup that will take place at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.
Two days later, on November 18, Houston will meet the winner or loser of the Florida‑Notre Dame clash, also at the same downtown Las Vegas venue.
The final opponent will emerge from a pool that includes West Virginia, Auburn, Kansas or UNLV, with the game scheduled for November 19, 2026.
All three contests will be staged at Michelob ULTRA Arena, a state‑of‑the‑art facility that has become the hub of the tournament’s activities.
Coaching Vision and Player Development
Head Coach Kelvin Sampson, who has guided the Cougars for several seasons, will lead a roster that blends experienced returnees with a wave of new talent.
Among the returning players, forward Joseph Tugler brings Big 12 Conference All‑Tournament Team honors, while guard Mercy Miller previously posted a career‑high 15 points, forward Chase McCarty reached a career‑best 20 points, and guard Kordel Jefferson is returning from a knee injury.
The team also welcomes eight new recruits, including Ikenna Aloze, Arafan Diané, Djafar Silimana, Braden East, Corey Hadnot II, Delrecco Gillespie, Dedan Thomas Jr and Tyus Thomas, who will add depth and versatility.
The upcoming schedule not only underscores the Cougars’ non‑conference ambitions but also positions the program for a potentially national spotlight as the games will be streamed across ESPN’s platforms.
