Todd Whitting’s time as head coach of the Houston Cougars baseball team ended abruptly when the university decided not to renew his contract after sixteen seasons.
A Legacy of Growth
During his tenure he compiled 498 wins, captured five conference championships and guided the program to four NCAA Tournament appearances, highlighted by a 2013 season that produced the best start in 24 years and a brief top‑20 national ranking.
The upgrades to Schroeder Park and a new practice facility, completed in 2020, were intended to give the team a modern edge, yet the Cougars finished the most recent Big 12 season with a 7‑23 record.
Whitting noted the persistent challenge of operating with one of the smallest budgets among Power Four schools, emphasizing that the department often had to achieve more with fewer resources.
He took the opportunity to thank Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez and the university’s leadership, including Dr. Khator, for their support despite the fiscal constraints.
Looking forward, Whitting expressed confidence that the next coach will build on the foundation he helped establish, continuing the climb toward sustained competitiveness.
