A Roller‑Coaster Road to the Playoffs
The Bethel Park baseball squad finished the regular season with a 12‑8 record, earning a spot in the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs. The journey was anything but linear, marked by an early six‑game winning streak that set high expectations, followed by a six‑game losing stretch that tested the team's resolve.
Coach Pat Zehnder praised the players' work ethic and camaraderie, noting that the group refused to let the slump define their season. "We stayed focused on the process, and the guys kept grinding," Zehnder said, emphasizing the mental toughness that eventually turned the tide.
Offensively, the team posted a collective batting average of .311 with a .404 on‑base percentage. Junior DH/1B Michael Hladio led the way with a .412 average, while senior outfielder/pitcher Owen Turoski hit .358 and earned first‑team all‑section honors. Senior infielder/pitcher Mike Bruckner contributed a .316 average, a .525 slugging percentage and 17 RBIs, rounding out a potent lineup.
The pitching staff was equally impressive. Tyler Stewart went 3‑1 with a save, striking out 24 in 20 2/3 innings, while Nick Rillo led the team in saves with three and posted 21 strikeouts against just one walk in 16 innings. Veteran right‑hander Matthew Hughes anchored the rotation, complemented by Jace Rendulic, who together gave the team a reliable depth of arms.
In section play, Bethel Park tied for third place with Peters Township and Upper St. Clair, each finishing 6‑6. Moon captured the section title at 9‑3, while South Fayette followed at 7‑5. The team's final push secured a playoff matchup that promises to showcase the resilience and talent that characterized their season.
