Roster Turmoil at the Desert
Three Arizona baseball standouts—Roman Meyers, Sean Barta and Chaz McNelis—have each signaled their intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal, a move that underscores the program’s unsettled offseason.
The departures come as the Wildcats grapple with a season marred by injuries and a roster that many analysts described as one of the weakest in recent memory, leaving the team with a losing record and limited depth.
Meyers, who appeared in 25 games this spring and posted a .214 average with three home runs and 17 RBI, joins a growing list of players seeking new opportunities, while Barta and McNelis have been sidelined for most of the year after preseason injuries.
The situation was further complicated by the loss of starting left fielder Easton Breyfogle, who suffered a season‑ending shoulder injury in February, and the emergence of true freshman Caleb Danzeisen, who stepped into right field after being recruited as a first baseman and catcher.
Compounding the upheaval, Arizona announced a change to its coaching staff for the upcoming season, confirming that hitting and catching coach Toby DeMello would not be retained, a decision that could reshape the team’s development strategy.
