As the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League finals approach, three teams from Westmoreland County are drawing attention for the pivotal role their pitcher‑catcher combinations play in the championship picture.
Hempfield’s Quest for a Repeat
Hempfield enters the Class 6A title game with a proven battery of Julia Varhola and Ella Berkebile. Varhola boasts a 2.05 ERA and 147 strikeouts over 88 2/3 innings, while Berkebile has committed only one error in 200 chances and is batting .369 with four homers and 24 RBIs. The duo has helped the team secure a repeat berth, and they will meet Seneca Valley in the final.
Mt. Pleasant’s First Final Since 2021
Mt. Pleasant’s championship run rests on the arms of Danica Trainer and the bat of Emma Miller. Trainer is 13‑4 with a 2.94 ERA, 98 strikeouts and just 20 walks in 18 appearances, and Miller is batting .400 with 15 RBIs. Their effort marks the team’s first appearance in the 3A title game since 2021, where they will face South Park.
GCC’s Veteran Attack
Greensburg Central Catholic relies on Tyler Samide, who carries a 0.00 ERA and is slated to start the Class A final, and Anthony Grippo, who hits .580 with 25 RBIs and 29 runs. The team also features five batters who are hitting .478 or better, underscoring a deep, experienced lineup that will meet Eden Christian for the championship.
The upcoming finals will showcase how these battery partnerships and seasoned lineups shape the landscape of high school baseball in the region, promising competitive contests across the 6A, 3A and A divisions.
