Steve Schweer Takes the Helm of UW-Oshkosh Men's Basketball
Steve Schweer has been appointed the 16th head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh men's basketball program, a role he will assume on June 1. The university announced the hire after a thorough national search, highlighting Schweer's proven track record of building winning cultures at the Division III level.
During his tenure at Illinois College, Schweer guided the team to back-to-back Midwest Conference championships and a appearance in the NCAA Division III championship game. In 2024 the club celebrated its first-ever tournament victory, a milestone that earned him the Midwest Conference Coach of the Year honor and regional Coach of the Year recognition from d3hoops.com.
Before his head-coaching posts, Schweer honed his craft as an assistant at North Central College and Monmouth College, where he contributed to recruiting pipelines and defensive schemes. He also played collegiately at Illinois Wesleyan University from 2003 to 2006, experiences that give him a player-centric perspective.
The Titans inherit a program steeped in tradition. UW-Oshkosh has captured 15 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season titles and five tournament crowns, highlighted by a national championship in 2019. Schweer will look to blend that heritage with his own championship pedigree as he shapes the next chapter.
Athletic director Matt Lewis praised the hire, noting Schweer's ability to recruit, develop talent, and uphold the university's competitive standards. "We are excited to welcome a coach whose vision aligns with our aspirations," Lewis said. Meanwhile, players and staff alike are eager to see how Schweer's offensive philosophy will translate to the Division I stage.
