A revamped roster
Iowa State’s men’s basketball program is entering the 2026‑27 season with a markedly different look. Five newcomers via the transfer portal and three freshmen will don the cardinal and gold, stepping into the void left by the departure of key contributors.
Among those leaving are Tamin Lipsey, Joshua Jefferson, Nate Heise and Milan Momcilovic, each of whom played a pivotal role in the Cyclones’ recent campaigns. Replacing that level of experience will demand a collective effort rather than a single savior.
Prather’s statistical impact
One name that has already generated buzz is Ryan Prather Jr., a transfer from Robert Morris. Prather arrived with a reputation for precision passing and a remarkably low turnover rate, attributes that helped him top the nation in assist‑to‑turnover ratio.
During his most recent college season he averaged 15.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game while dishing out 3.6 assists for every turnover. That efficiency earned him a place on the All‑Horizon Second Team and the league’s best Offensive Win Shares.
Otzelberger notes that Prather’s offensive skill set is only part of the equation; defensive reliability will ultimately dictate his playing time. If the junior can tighten up on that end, his impact could be transformative for the Cyclones.
Looking ahead
Beyond individual statistics, the broader narrative revolves around how quickly the new roster can gel. Early practices suggest a promising chemistry, but the true test will come when the team faces competitive opposition.
