Washington State surged past San Diego State 14-9 on Thursday, securing a berth in the championship game of the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Baseball Championship.
The Cougars fell behind early, as the Aztecs exploded for five runs in the opening inning, but a swift counterattack turned the tide.
A comeback for the ages
Washington State erupted for eight runs in the second frame, extending the lead to 8-5, and added two more in the third and four in the fourth to pull away.
The offense was relentless, finishing with 18 hits that included a home run and a triple, while Gavin Roy drove in five runs on three hits and crossed the plate once.
On the mound, Luke Meyers delivered a masterclass, tossing seven innings, striking out seven batters without issuing a walk, earning his fourth win of the tournament.
Looking ahead
With the victory, the Cougars now await the winner of the elimination game between San Diego State and Air Force, a matchup scheduled for Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. MST, before meeting that opponent on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. MST.
The double‑elimination format gives Washington State two chances to claim the conference title, and the team has yet to taste defeat in the tournament.
