Copley‑Fairlawn Schools Name Cody Calhoun as New Boys Basketball Head Coach

After a nationwide search, the district selects a coach with deep roots in the region and a focus on holistic player development.

A Coach Rooted in the Community

Copley‑Fairlawn City Schools has announced Cody Calhoun as its new boys basketball head coach, a hire that remains pending formal board approval. The decision follows a rigorous selection process that attracted 47 applicants and required 19 in‑depth interviews.

Calhoun arrives with a proven track record, having served as head coach at both Rootstown and Aurora high schools, where he honed a philosophy that blends technical development with character building. His approach emphasizes a comprehensive view of the program, extending beyond the court to foster positive relationships with students and the broader community.

A graduate of Green High School and a Kent State University alumnus, Calhoun previously worked as a student assistant for the Kent State men’s basketball program before returning to his roots to coach at Green at various levels, including junior varsity and varsity. Over five seasons he led the varsity team at Rootstown and three at Aurora, accumulating a wealth of experience across different competitive environments.

Superintendent Aimee Kirsch praised Calhoun’s character and vision, stating that his relational style aligns perfectly with the district’s goals for the program. “We are excited to welcome a coach who not only understands the game but also values the connections that drive student success,” she said.

Calhoun expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that leading the Copley program represents a full‑circle moment for a career built on mentorship and community engagement. He looks forward to building on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Adam Cestaro, who guided the team for the past four seasons.
