A Season of Promise and Closure
The Panthers have become a fixture in the WPIAL playoffs, reaching the postseason in seven of the last nine years. Their most recent appearance ended in the opening round against Carmichaels, where a 7-4 scoreboard reflected a narrow loss that left the coaching staff and players contemplating what might have been.
Coach Andrew Petruska noted that the team struck the ball hard but fell victim to a handful of plays that did not go their way. "We hit the ball hard, but a few plays didn't go our way," he said, emphasizing the fine margins that separate a win from a loss in high‑school baseball.
The starting lineup that took the field included Charlie Scally, Austin Fritz, Billy Pietragallo, Logan Bereznay, Jacob Stanislaw, Carter Jackson, Caden Hawkins, David Young, and Justin Mull. Each of these athletes contributed to a season that finished with an 8-10 overall record and a 3-5 mark in Section 3A.
Austin Fritz anchored the rotation as the team's No. 1 starter, logging eight starts and 36 innings pitched. He was followed by Logan Bereznay, the No. 2 starter, who added 17 innings on the mound, while Jacob Stanislaw also saw meaningful time on the mound. The pitching staff was further bolstered by Jackson, Pietragallo, Karlik, and Young, forming a corps that showed depth despite the eventual setback.
Billy Pietragallo, a versatile four‑year starter, was a constant presence both in the infield and outfield. His experience and adaptability made him a cornerstone of the squad, though he will not continue his baseball career at the collegiate level. The coach praised his contributions, underscoring the impact of a player who helped shape the team's identity over multiple seasons.
Another notable contributor was Niko Frazzini, an outfielder who posted a .400 batting average in limited opportunities and added speed to the defensive side of the game. Though his playing time was constrained, his performance provided a spark and highlighted the depth of talent on the roster.
The loss to Carmichaels marks the end of a chapter for a program that has consistently positioned itself as a playoff contender. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, Sewickley Academy looks to build on this experience as it turns its focus toward future seasons and the development of its players within the Pennsylvania baseball landscape.
