A Goalie Market in Motion
Sebastian Cossa, once heralded as the Detroit Red Wings’ goalie of the future, is now at the center of trade speculation as the club evaluates its depth between the pipes.
The team’s crease features Trey Augustine and Michal Postava, with Postava having posted stronger AHL numbers and a championship ring in the Czech top league, suggesting he may be the more consistent option at this stage.
General manager Steve Yzerman, who has steered the franchise through a rebuild, is reportedly weighing a move that would bring an immediate‑impact player to Detroit, especially as the roster pushes for a playoff push.
Interest is said to be coming from several NHL franchises, including the Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers, each of which could benefit from a young net‑minder who is already NHL‑ready.
Cossa’s credentials include a 2.33 goals‑against average and a .915 save percentage in the AHL, a ranking of 19th on TSN analyst Craig Button’s Top 50 Affiliated Prospects list, and a junior career with the Edmonton Oil Kings that saw him share the crease with future star Connor McDavid.
Among the suitors, the Oilers are looking for a long‑term solution in goal, the Flyers see an upgrade over Sam Ersson, the Panthers have two unrestricted‑free‑agent goalies and could use Cossa as a No. 2, the Senators are exploring a backup role behind Linus Ullmark, and the Rangers are weighing a young backup to complement Igor Shesterkin, though they might also consider veteran Cam Talbot.
If a deal were to materialize, it would not be the first time Detroit has moved a promising prospect for a player who can help the club now, a strategy that aligns with Yzerman’s recent moves in free agency and the trade market.
